The town was originally built during the\u00a0Minoan civilization, but the current 16<sup>e<\/sup> century old town was almost entirely built by the\u00a0Republic of Venice, with some additions by the Ottoman Turks. The town is located between the Psilor\u00edtis mountain range, with traditional mountain villages and rural landscapes in the east, and the Mediterranean Sea and its beautiful beaches and resorts in the north.<\/p>\n<p>Enter the old town through Porta Guora, the Great Gate arch, the only part remaining from the Venetian wall, and stroll the narrow cobbled streets with the mix architectural designs of the charming pastel colored venetian renaissance houses with the wooden Turks balconies, the churches and mosques.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enjoy the 16<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle <strong>Venetian loggia<\/strong>, and the beautiful 15<sup>e<\/sup> century Rimondi Fountain in Platanou square with the three lions framed by ancient Corinthian columns.<\/li>\n<li>Admire the Ottoman 19<sup>e<\/sup> century, 27 meters high Neratze Mosque minaret<\/li>\n<li>Visit the 16<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle <strong>Fortezza Castle<\/strong> on Paleokastro hill<strong>,<\/strong> the huge fortress built by the Venetian, offering amazing views of the old town and the sea.<\/li>\n<li>Visit the small Archaeological Museum and Folk Art Museum<\/li>\n<li>Explore the charming Venetian Harbor waterfront, with the small fishing boats tied in the calm and clear water.
