Stroll the village cobbled alleys and archways, admire the small, jumbled houses, and squares, all dated back to the 17<sup>e<\/sup> century when it flourished as a market town.<br \/>\nWilliam Wordsworth the poet was teaching in the 16<sup>e<\/sup> century at Hawkshead Grammar School while Beatrix Potter lived nearby at hilltop farm. Today the village relies on tourism with many small inns, guest houses, teashops, and gift shops. Visit the village square, the 17<sup>e<\/sup> century Church of St Michael &amp; All Angels, and the old grammar school.<br \/>\nA 17<sup>e<\/sup> century house in the village was home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetjoy.com\/fr\/attraction\/beatrix-potters-hill-top-farm\/\"><strong>Beatrix Potter Gallery<\/strong><\/a>, exhibiting a selection of Beatrix Potter\u2019s original drawings and illustrations.
