It\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetjoy.com\/fr\/attraction\/beaches-on-kos-island\/\"><strong>beaches of Kos<\/strong><\/a> to which the island owes its high popularity as a summer vacation destination. Numerous beautiful sandy beaches are spread throughout the 112 km coastline, with great conditions for watersports, especially wind and kite surfing. The main villages in the island which measure 40 by 8 km, are the popular beach resorts of <strong>Kardamena<\/strong> in the east coast,\u00a0Kefalos in the south,\u00a0Tingaki, Marmari, and Mastihari on the west coast and the mountainous villages of Antimachia and Pyli.<br \/>\nKos was the birthplace of\u00a0Hippocrates, the father of medicine in the 5<sup>e<\/sup> century BC, and the island played a major regional roll in Classical Greece and in Roman times, to be followed by the Byzantine, the Venetians and the Ottomans. These civilizations have all left their mark on the island especially in the town of KOS.<br \/>\nVisit the Town of Kos, stroll its streets, alleys, and the marine waterfront to enjoy the cafes, restaurants, small shops, and its vibrant night life especially in <strong>Exarhia<\/strong>, the bar district, with its numerous hotels, bars and night clubs.<br \/>\nExplore the 4<sup>e<\/sup> century BC Agora and the western Archeological Zone, the Archeological Museum, and the Hippocrates\u2019 Plane tree. Visit the Medieval Nerantzia castle, and the ruins of the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> century BC Asklepieion, the ancient medical center complex outside of town. Touring the island, visit the mountainous village of <a href=\"https:\/\/thetjoy.com\/fr\/attraction\/antimachia-village\/\"><strong>Antimachia<\/strong><\/a> with its beautiful, renovated Windmill, the Antimachia Traditional House, and the 14<sup>e<\/sup> century Venetian castle.<br \/>\nIn the village of Pyli explore the Byzantine Castle with the overwhelming landscapes of the island and sea.
