Built in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> century using travertine limestone, tuff (volcanic rock), and brick-faced concrete, the Colosseum was an arena for gladiatorial contests, public spectacles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. In the 50,000 to 80,000 spectator\u2019s amphitheater, tiered seating encircled the arena with underground complex of cages and preparation areas.
