Palacio de Monserrate is a private villa located 4 km from Sintra\u2019s center in the foothills overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The palace was built in the 2nd half of the 19th century on the ruins of a Neo-Gothic mansion built a century earlier, and is one of the best examples of Portuguese Romanticism architecture together with the Pena Palace<\/strong><\/a>. The mansion\u2019s architecture and decorations are influenced by Romanticism, Medieval, and Moorish styles with Neo-Gothic elements.
\nWhile visiting the villa admire the eclectic combination of the various styles, including the Sacred Art Room, home to an interesting religious artworks collection, and the Main Hall with the central atrium and fountain and the beautifully decorated walls.
\nMore in the villa, foliage motifs that decorate the walls a reference to the Gothic period, the Gallery with the Moorish arches between the columns, and the library with its Neo-Renaissance decorations.
\nBut its the villa\u2019s park that makes the Monserrate Palace so beautiful and unique.
\nThe park is designed in a romantic style with a lake, springs, waterfalls, fountains, and grottoes, all within Botanical Gardens, one of the most important in Portugal. In the garden numerous rare and exotic trees and plants from all over the world arranged geographically along trails and among various stone features.<\/p>\n\n
