The convent which was destroyed by the infamous earthquake and fire of 1755 is home to the small Carmo Archaeological Museum and its collection of artifacts from the pre-historic period through to the Middle Ages. The eclectic collection includes among others a chapel decorated with decorative tiles, prehistoric tools, Moorish decorations, pre-Columbian pottery, and South American mummies.
