The Mosteiro dos Jeronimos in the Belem District is a 16th century Gothic Manueline style monastery, one of Lisbon\u2019s icons. The monastery was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama, the discoverer who found the marine route from Europe to India at the end of the 15th century. The monastery\u2019s unique and magnificent architecture is extravagantly decorated with stone carvings, various marine end eastern design motives and sculptures, in addition to beautiful courtyards to enjoy and admire.
\nthe Chapel of St. Jerome part of the monastery is home to the tombs of Vasco da Gama, as well as other notable people and Portuguese royalties.
\nThe monastery\u2019s western wing is home to a Maritime Museum presenting the Age of Discovery and Portugal\u2019s nautical history. The museum collections include nautical maps, ancient globes, ship models, and much more.
