The square is dominated by the New City Hall, Neues Rathaus, on the north side, and the Gothic Old City Hall with its ballroom and tower on the east side.<br \/>\nThe pedestrian street between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz are highly popular with numerous shops, boutiques, and restaurants. Various festivals are held in the square including a large Christmas Market which starts three weeks before Christmas, offering Christmas goods, food and drink.
