The large marble columns of the basilica probably came from an ancient Roman building. In the church a golden coffered ceiling commissioned by Pope Alexander VI and was built with gold brought by Columbus from America. The patriarchal basilica contains the funerary monuments of Pope Clement IX, Paul V and Nicolas IV.
