While in Avanos, you can visit Zelve (5 km to the south), with its fairy chimneys landscapes, the rock houses, caves, and rock churches, and Cavusin village, 4 km south of Avanos, with its rock castle and Cavusin church. 15 km north of Avanos visit the vast multi floor underground city of Ozkonak,. Ozkonak was home to up to 60,000 people, and unlike the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, had very long and narrow holes between the floors, used for communication and ventilation when the city was sealed against invasion. 6 km east of Avanos, visit Saruhan Kervansaray, the restorated historical road Inn built with local colored stones in the 13th century by the Anatolian Seljuks, on the Silk Road leading from China to Turkey and Europe. The impressive complex which is now used for cultural and art events, consists of Summer and Winter sections, with a large courtyard, a portico with a fountain, a domed mosque, panoramic terrace, and more. Another Seljuk Road Inn presenting magnificent architecture, with similar features as the Saruhan Kervansaray, is the Agzıkarahan Kervansaray in the Ağzıkarahan village, near Aksaray, north of Selime and Ihlara valley.
