The small 6X11 km island and its sole city, Vila Baleira, are 43 km northeast of Madeira Island and unlike Madeira it has a long beautiful sandy beach stretch, beach resorts, and all the facilities required for a great summer beach-based vacation.<br \/>\nThe island\u2019s western and northern regions are mountainous and hilly with ~500 meters high mountain peaks, rocky cliffs falling to the ocean, and magnificent landscapes of mountains, rugged coastline, and surrounding islets.
