The square is dominated by the New City Hall, Neues Rathaus, on the north side, and the Gothic Old City Hall with its ballroom and tower on the east side. The pedestrian street between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz and Marienplatz are highly popular with numerous shops, boutiques, and restaurants. Various festivals are held in the square including a large Christmas Market which starts three weeks before Christmas, offering Christmas goods, food and drink. The Tourist Information Center is in the Rathaus in the
