A Medieval 16th century town on the southern coast of Brittany, 32 km northeast of Carnac, and 113 km southwest of Rennes. Enjoy the beautiful old center, cobbled winding streets, magnificent colored half timbered houses, small shops, restaurants and cafes.
The beautiful town’s harbor is packed with boats, and it has a long promenade which continues for a few kilometers all the way to the popular port and peninsula at Conleau. Explore the Hotel de Ville (Town Hall), walk along the town walls, the Garenne, with its gardens and magnificent washhouses, and visit the town market at Place des Lices (square), where local food produce is sold all week but Monday. Strolling the old quarter, visit the 15th century Cathedral of St. Peter, the 15th century five stories tower, Tour de Connetable de Richemont, and the Museum of Archaeology in the beautifully preserved Chateau Gaillard.
In the Museum of Fine Arts near the cathedral enjoy a nice collection of art from Delacroix to modern contemporary art. If time allows take a boat cruise to explore the Gulf of Morbihan and its numerous islands and Islets including Ile-aux-Moines, Ile d’Arz, Ile Gavrinis, and many more. In some of the islands you will observe Megalithic ruins from the Neolithic period such as the famous monument in Ile Gavrinis.
Visit Rochefort-en-terre, voted in 2016 the most beautiful village in France, 40 km east of Vanes. In the village you will admire the great landscapes of the region, several historic sites including Notre-Dame-de-la-Tronchaye castle and Saint Michel Cathedral, and various theme and nature parks.
Spend half a day in Vannes on your way to Carnac.
