A picturesque town 53 km northeast of Avignon and 30 km northeast of Orange, presenting a charming combination of Roman town ruins and a beautifully preserved Medieval town connected by a Roman era bridge over the Ouveze River. In the Roman town site explore the Puymin, the remains of a Roman district including paved streets, a shopping area with large columns, roman baths and an Amphitheatre which is still active during the summer festival.
Explore luxurious Roman houses with magnificent Mosaics such as in the beautiful Apollon Laure house, in the Theo Desplans Archeological Museum, and in the Puymin Museum. In the museums learn about the Vaison-la-Romaine history including some remarkable findings from the Roman era.
Crossing the Roman stone bridge and strolling uphill through the winding narrow streets and charming passages, you will enjoy the 17th century Medieval upper town built around a square, the Place Montfort, with its numerous bars and cafes. Visit the impressive 13th century Notre-Dame de Nazareth Cathedral and cloister, the 8th century Saint Quenin chapel, and the tranquil Garden of the 9 Maidens with its engraved Granite structures and children’s playgrounds. In the 12th century clifftop castle ruins you will enjoy great landscapes of the surroundings. Northeast from the town enjoy the picturesque Lavender fields blooming in Blue during the summer.
