• The Santa Maria della Scala Museum

A cultural center and museum in piazza del duomo in what used to be a 13th century hospital. There are in the center various extraordinary 14th-15th centuries frescoes by masters such as Lorenzo di Pietro, Domenico di Bartolo, Simone Martini, Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti. Part of the center is the National Archaeological Museum with items from the Etruscan and Roman eras through to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period.
Part of the Medieval exhibition are Jacopo della Quercia’s original 15th century sculptures, and in the Old Chapel at the entrance, Bartolo’s Madonna della misericordia of the 15th century. Also in the complex the Museo d’Arte per Bambini, an art museum geared specifically for children.
