• The National Palace of Pena

Palacio da Pena is a 19th century Romantic royal castle built on the top of forested hill above Sintra. The magnificent palace is the main attraction in the charming and picturesque town, built by King Ferdinand II the “Artist King” for Queen Maria II in a Moorish-Manueline style with colourful domes, spires and fortifications. The palace is surrounded by the beautiful Pena Park, offering a network of strolling trails and narrow dirt roads.
The palace presents a mix of architecture and decorations styles, Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Islamic and Neo-Renaissance, combined in an eclectic manner. The palace interior are based on a restored Hieronymite convent with a Manueline-Renaissance which include a chapel, a clock tower, a courtyard surrounded by Moorish arches, and the palace halls and apartments.
While visiting the convent and the royal apartments which were used as the summer residence of the royal family, you will admire magnificent stuccos, painted walls covered with decorative Moorish tiles, and beautiful ceiling designs. Within the rooms enjoy the Stained Glass windows, period furniture and textiles, Japanese and Chinese porcelain, and much more.
