• The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Sea

A 15th century highly decorated Gothic Cathedral one of the largest in the world, built over a great 12th century mosque. With the central nave rising to 37 meters and a total area of more than 11,00o sqm, the Cathedral is famous for being the burial place of Christopher Columbus and his son Diego. The most impressive features in the central nave of the cathedral are the great boxlike choir loft, and the vast Gothic retablo of carved scenes from the life of Christ. The cathedral has 80 chapels, including the Capilla Real, and fifteen impressive carved doors on its four facades. Part of the Cathedral is La Giralda, an impressive 12th century minaret (tower) of more than 100m height. The magnificent bell tower and iconic symbol of the city offers great views of the city.
