• The Catacombs of St. Callixtus

The official cemetery of the Church of Rome in the 3rd century, located on the Appian Way, 4 km south of the Colosseum. Around half a million Christians were buried here, among them many martyrs and 16 popes. The catacombs of St. Callixtus are the largest and most important in Rome. In the burial complex a network of galleries in four levels, twenty meters deep and 12 miles long. The most important crypt in the Catacombs is the burial ground of 9 popes called “the little Vatican”.
