• The Catacombs of San Gennaro

Underground Paleo-Christian burial and worship sites carved out of tuff in the northern part of the city. The Catacombs are built in two levels, dated to the 2nd and 4th centuries. Tombs found in the site vary from pits dug in the ground, sarcophagi made of tuff, vertical graves, and graves built into the walls. Some of the tombs are decorated with mosaics or frescoes. Look for the Crypt of the Bishops, the majestic underground basilica adjecta and its three naves, and the upper catacomb which preserves some of the earliest Christian paintings in southern Italy. The main entrance to the Catacombs is next to the Madre del Buon Consiglio Basilica at Via Capodimonte.
