• Siena Cathedral

The Siena Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta at the Piazza del Duomo is a marvelous Romanesque-Gothic church, a short walk from piazza-del-campo. The 12th-14th centuries Duomo has an impressive facade with rich golden decor, statues and mosaic. Inside the cathedral admire the sculpture masterpieces by Nicola Pisano’s, Piccolomini, young Michelangelo, Donatello and Bernini, and frescoes by Pinturicchio. But the most fascinating artwork in the cathedral is the marble floor made of 56 painted cells dated to the 14th – 18th centuries. Part of the Duomo is the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo home to artworks formerly located in the Duomo. The museum collection includes the marvelous Duccio Maesta of the 14th century, Donatello’s Madonna and Child with Four Cherubs of the 15th century, a stained glass window of the 13th century by Duccio, artworks by Pietro Lorenzetti, and 12 statues by Giovanni Pisano.
