The Florence Cathedral known as the Duomo in Piazza del Duomo, is the most known attraction of the city. The Cathedral and its dome, 91 meters high and 46 meters wide, was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in the 15th century to be the largest dome in the world built from bricks and mortars. Also in the square, the nearby 14th century Giotto’s 85 meters high tower, the Campanile, offering amazing city views from its top, and the San Giovanni Medieval Baptistery located in front of the cathedral and decorated by numerous renowned Renaissance artists.
In the Cathedral, enjoy the exquisite mosaic floors, stunning frescoes by Vasari and Zuccari, and 44 stained-glass windows. But most of the Cathedral artwork treasures, as well as those from the Baptistery and the Campanile were removed over the years and many are presented in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, east of the Cathedral, where the story of the Duomo and its cupola is told.
