A charming Medieval town where the rivers Ille and Vilaine intersect, the capital of Brittany, France, 185 km southwest of Caen, and 67 km south of Mont Saint Michel.
In town numerous half timbered colorful 17th century buildings and cobbled streets packed with small shops, restaurants, and cafes. Visit parlement de Bretagne, the iconic Parliament Building and its famous Grand’ Chambre with the unique carved wood panels and painted canvases.
Admire the Rennes Cathedral of St. Peter, highly decorated with magnificent paintings and stained glass windows, and the 15th century Mordelaises Gates which serves as the main entrance to the city. Enjoy the large Saturday food produce Market in Place des Lices considered one of the largest food markets in France, and the beautiful public park of Thabor. In the park charming flower beds, beautiful Aviary, the Rose Gardens, a Botanical Garden, water features and children’s playgrounds. In the Spring and Summer the park is home to music and dance shows, and the mixed arts Mythos spring Festival.
Be sure to visit the famous Rennes’ Fine Arts Museum from Egyptian antiquities to modern art, including artworks by Lippi, da Vinci, Donatello, Michelangelo, Dirrer, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Pablo Picasso among many others.
When traveling in town look for the beautiful Odorico Mosaics which made Rennes one of the leading Mosaic production sites in France. The la Vilaine River that runs through Rennes offers various outdoor activities opportunities from riverfront walking and cycling, to river sports such as canoeing, kayaking, paddling, and barging.
Access Rennes by train or car from Paris, Caen or other major cities. Visit the town for half to one day and consider taking a one day trip to visit the nearby popular destinations of Mont Saint Michel andSaint-Malo. Visit for one day the nearby Medieval Towns of Fougeres, 52 km to the northeast, and Vitre, 37 km to the east, with their beautiful castles, Cathedrals, and partially timber houses, and the large and impressive Neolithic Dolmens Site, La Roche aux Fees, 37 km southeast of Rennes.
