• Porto Moniz

A picturesque must visit fishing town in the far northwestern region of the island offering rugged coastline with tranquil coves, mountain slopes and cliffs falling to the sea, the mystical Fanal’s Laurissilva forests, and great landscapes.
The main attraction in Porto Moniz.

  1. The highly popular natural volcanic sea water pools. There are two nearby pools’ complexes, Piscinas Naturais Velhas, connected by a promenade offering a great view of the rocks and the ocean. Swimming in these sea water pools with the ocean wave hitting the rocks in the background is a great experience not to be missed.
    • The 1st complex is of a smaller deep pool suitable also for diving and an 18th century building, ‘The Aquarium’, home to beautiful local Fish Aquariums.
    • The 2nd complex, Piscinas Naturais do Aquario, is a newer complex with larger natural and man built pools, children’s pool and playground, and all the required facilities.
  2. Four km east of Porto Moniz, admire the iconic rock and small islets emerging from the sea at Ribeira da Janela, a small village on the ocean’s coast. The small, pebbled beach in the village and the nearby camping site is a surfer’s favourite.
  3. From Ribeira da Janela drive south to visit the Fanal Forest, a highly popular and mystical Forest part of the indigenous Laurissilva forest, offering great hiking trails along the Levadas and water streams.
