• Ponta do Sol & Beach

A small, picturesque town considered the sunniest in the island, 23 km west of Funchal, offering beautiful landscapes of the northern mountain range, rural fields and surrounding traditional villages, and the Atlantic Coast.

  • The Ponta do Sol Beach is a small stretch of pebbled beach within a cove sheltered by cliffs and a valley. One of the most popular beaches in the island offers clear and mild temperatures waters, and all the required beach facilities including a bar area.
  • The popular Madalena do Mar Beach, in Banda de Alem, 5 km west of Ponta do Sol, is within a tranquil cove surrounded by high cliffs falling to the coast. The black pebbles and sandy coast offer clear and mild temperature waters, a restaurant, a bar, children’s playground, and the required beach facilities.
  • Admire and experience the Cascata dos Anjos waterfall falling right on the road and offering free “carwash”, 1 km west of town.

Driving the ER211/105 or the ER104 scenic roads 26 km north up to the mountains, you will arrive to Paul da Serra Plateau, 1,500 meters high, offering great landscapes of the surrounding mountain tips, deep valleys and waterfalls, Laurissilva forests, and beautiful Levadas and hiking trails such as the PR6/6.1 trail. On ER105 you will find the starting point of two Levadas to the Risco waterfall and the Lagoa das 25 Fontes Waterfall, and many others.
