• Ponta de Sao Lourenco, Eastern Madeira

Ponta de Sao Lourenco is the eastern tip of the Madeira Island, a rocky and mountainous 9 km long volcanic peninsula followed by the Cevada Islet and the Fora Islet. In the peninsula diverse low Fauna, sea birds, and Sea Lions which are rarely spotted. Admire the magnificent and dramatic scenery of the peninsula’s massive rocks pounded by the big waves, the land and sea scenery, and to the other direction, the panoramic views of the southern and northern parts of the island.
To explore the full richness of the peninsula, hike the challenging 6 km PR8 trail, Vereda da Ponta de Sao Lourenco, going up and down the hills. In summer consider the heat and prepare yourself accordingly.
The trail starts where the road from the port city of Canical ends. Alternatively, a boat trip around the peninsula will be also rewarding.

  • To reach Ponta de Sao Lourenco, head to the town of Machico, the island’s agricultural center, on your way to the small port town of Canical, then 5 km east on the ER109 road to the PR8 trail starting point, or to the beautiful and impressive Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto and the Vulcano Penha de Aguia
  • In Machico enjoy the small, pebbled, Praia de S. Roque windy beach, and Machico beach, offering good surfing conditions, the nearby town’s promenade, and the 15th century Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceicao
  • In the port town of Canical, which used to be a whales fishing exit port, take a Whales and Dolphins watching cruise in which you will sail also along the beautiful peninsula. Also in town a small Whales Museum, Museu da Baleia da Madeira.
  • If time allows exploit the network of trails connecting Machico to the small coastal village of Porto da Cruise, 10 km to the northwest. Starting at Porto da Cruise you will enjoy the magnificent ocean landscapes and the Laurissilva forest area along this 15 km moderate running trail. The trail starts at Alagoa beach and continues towards Vereda do Larano.

While in Porto da Cruise enjoy the two black sand beaches offering great surfing conditions, the Porto da Cruz Bathing Complex with its two swimming pools and modern facilities, and the coastline promenade offering both sea and mountainous landscape.
