The city is home to many museums, galleries, and collections, some considered the best in the UK.

Ashmolean Museum
The world’s first university museum and the oldest museum in the UK, dated to the 17th century. In the museum there are significant collections of art, anthropological and archaeological treasures. The museum art collection includes works by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Turner, and Picasso, classical sculptures, Far East art, Greek and Roman pottery, and a valuable collection of jewelry.

The University Museum of Natural History
Home to the University’s zoological, entomological, and geological collections. Its main exhibits include a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, and the complete remains of a Dodo. Other exhibits include geological, mineralogical, and zoological sections.

Oxford Castle Museum
A place of incarceration since the 11th century and today a museum, presenting past day to day life and events in the castle. Explore the Saxon St. George’s Tower, the 900 years old crypt and the 18th century Debtors’ Tower.

Pitt Rivers Museum
Home to one of the world’s finest collections of anthropology and archaeology, with more than 500,000 items from every continent and throughout human history.

The Museum of the History of Science
Home to 15,000 artifacts of early scientific instruments associated with figures such as George III, Einstein, and Lawrence of Arabia.
