• Hohenschwangau Castle

A Neo Gothic castle built and renovated by King Maximillian II of Bavaria in the 1830′ on top of the ruins of a 12th century castle. The castle is built on a hill above the Hohenschwangau village in the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border. Surrounded by four lakes against the slopes of the Ammergau Alps, the castle is 4 km east of Fussen and 120 km southwest of Munich, marking the southern end of the Romantic Road together with the more popular but overcrowded Neuschwanstein Castle. The castle was the summer home of King Maximillian II family, and later only Queen Marie lived in the castle until the end of the 19th century. The beautiful castle was renovated with Neo Gothic frescoes depicting the Holy Grail, and the Lohengrin Swan Knight, where each of the rooms have a specific different theme. In the Music Room, note the piano played by Richard Wagner, king Ludwig’s telescope and other artworks. Enjoy the period furnishings, paintings, and wall frescoes. Visiting Hohenschwangau Castle, you will enjoy a quaint visit, in somewhat more homey setting, and significantly less tourists.
