• Harburg Castle and Town

Harburg is a small picturesque town on the Wörnitz River in Bavaria Germany along the Romantic Road, 100 km southeast of Rothenburg and 130 km northwest of Munich.
Stroll the cobbled narrow allies with the beautiful 17th-18th centuries Renaissance partially timbered houses such as the Schwarzkopf House on Nördlingen street. Visit the Market Square, the 17th century St. Barbara Church, the beautifully restored Old Stone Bridge with its nine arches over the Wörnitz river, and the nearby 16th century Bruck Mill (Bruckmühle). Relax at the Wornitzstrand on the riverbank overlooking the beautiful views of the castle, the old stone bridge and the old town.
The impressive and beautifully preserved Medieval Harburg Castle is the main town’s attraction, built on a hill overlooking the town. The castle was a military stronghold during the reign of the Staufer-Kings from the 11th century through to the 13th century. Being one of the largest, best-preserved castles in Germany, the Harburg Castle is one of the must-see jewels of the Romantic Road.
The castle which served rulers as their residence and seat of government, is surrounded by a completely preserved late Medieval circular wall with 6 towers and defensive corridor, and it includes a complex of buildings, surrounding a large courtyard. The castle buildings are from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods, including the residential quarters, the baroque church of St. Michael, the Prison Towers, the Dungeon, and more. The residential quarters include the Courtroom, the prince’s hall and gallery, and the impressive Tea Room.
Be sure to participate in a castle tour provided on site, otherwise major parts of the complex will be inaccessible for you.
Starting from the upper castle’s parking lot, a Fairy Tale trail surrounds the castle, with numerous sculptures and displays representing a variety of fairy tales both from the Grimm Brothers and other Classic tales.
In the town of Rain, 26 km southeast of Harburg, visit Dehner Blumenpark, a botanical heaven with gardens from Asia, Central Europe and England. The park main attractions are the Japanese landscape garden, the Baroque style rose garden, and the rhododendron grove.
