A 13th century town in Bavaria at the foot of the Alps, the most southern town on the Romantic Road, 1 km from the Austrian border. The town is located on the banks of the Lech River which flows into the Forggensee man-made lake.
Fussen is especially known for the nearby magnificent palaces of Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, and the eastern Linderhof Palace. The town has a tranquil, well-preserved old quarter home to charming pastel-colored buildings and the 9th century St. Mang’s Abbey.
The nearby hills and mountains have countless nature trails which boast overwhelming scenery. Stroll the beautiful old town cobbled streets with the colored buildings covered with frescoes, and visit the Gothic High Castle, Hohes Schloss of Fussen, with its beautiful courtyard, clock tower, and a gallery of Gothic and Renaissance Paintings.
Explore one of the numerous baroque churches, the medieval city walls, and the former Benedictine Abbey of St. Mang. Fussen is also part of the scenic German Alpine Road crossing Bavaria from Lake Constance in the west to Berchtesgaden in the east.
When in the region exploit the great outdoor activities opportunities including Hiking, Cycling, swimming and cruising the lakes of Forggensee, Weissensee, Hopfensee surrounding Fussen, all within beautiful green fields, forests, lakes and mountains.
Spend 1-2 days in Fussen and explore its surroundings. Traveling around Fussen there are few recommended day tours destinations and attractions including the highlights of the region, the king Ludwig II palaces, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, and the Linderhof Palace 42 km east of town. Travel 27 km northeast to visit the beautifully decorated Wieskirche pilgrimage church, or take the cable car up to Mount Tegelberg summit for overwhelming landscapes and for skiing.
Visit the charming village of Oberammergau 47 km east of Fussen, famous for its wood carvers and their beautiful handcrafts, and the frescoed buildings, and visit the nearby village of Ettal with its impressive Benedictine abbey. For a unique experience visit the Reutte Bridge, a 110 meters high and 400 meters long suspension footbridge connecting the Ehrenberg Castle and the Claudia Roman Fortress ruins 17 km south of Fussen. Walking the bridge is a frightening experience rewarded with magnificent landscapes.
