• Furnas Valley and Lake

The Val das Furnas is home to the town of Furnas and numerous Thermal Springs, fumaroles of hot water, geothermal steam vents, and therapeutic mud. The beautiful valley is surrounded by green hills, and is home to the magnificent Furnas Lake, the Lagoa das Furnas, 3 km west of the town, within a dormant volcanic crater known for the sulfurous steam vents coming out of the water.
While in the region enjoy the following attractions.

  1. There are two “SPAs” in Furnas where you can enjoy bathing in thermal pools;
      • Parque Terra Nostra, a large Botanic Garden including numerous trees and plants, ponds, garden decorative features, and hot spring, and mineral rich water pools where you can bath and enjoy.
      • Poca do Dona Beija, a nice site with outdoor thermal pools of 39 degrees C sulfurous waters.
  1. Enjoy the beautiful landscapes from the viewpointsin the region.
      • Miradouro do Lombo dos Milhos
      • Miradouro do Salto do Cavalo.
      • Miradouro do Pico do Ferro which requires a 1.5 km steep hike to the viewpoint.
  1. Small children will enjoy the Reserva Florestal de Recreio do Viveiro das Furnas, a garden with small zoo and a forest park. Older children will have fun in the Azores TreeTop Park on the northwestern shores of the Furnas Lake.
  2. It is recommended to visit the Visitor center, Centro de Interpretacao Ambiental das Furnas, on the southern shores of the lake to learn about the area and what it has to offer. Near the center, visit from the outside only, the small chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitorias and its beautiful garden.
  3. To fully enjoy the region and its beautiful landscapes, hike the Lagoa das Furnas PRC06 trail from town starting near the Parque Terra Nostra, to the lake. It’s an easy 3 hour circular trail. Another nice hike is around the lake in an easy, circular and level, 1-2 hour Pousio do dragao
  4. Most important when visiting Furnas is to enjoy in one of the local restaurants the Cozido de Furnas, a slow cooked stew within volcanic steam vents in the lake area.
  5. If time allows, enjoy some time in the black sand Praia do Fogo beach, 8 km south of Furnas near Ribeira Quente, where the hot spring waters meet the cold ocean water. In the beach some facilities and a bar.
