• Fogo Lake, Caldeira Velha

Lagoa Fogo is a breathtaking lake, the largest and the highest in Sao Miguel, located within a green volcanic crater with beautiful turquoise waters.
The lake is located in the center of the island on road EN5-2A, 15 km north of Lagoa on the south coast, and 10 km south of Rebeira Grande on the north Coast.
Traveling in the region enjoy the following attractions recommended by TheTjoy.com

  1. On the road there are two major viewpoints, Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa and Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo, both offering magnificent landscapes of both the lake and the entire island.
  2. Take a short 1 km trail from the road to the lake shores and Praia de Lagoa do Fogo beach.
  3. Caldeira Velha, Centro de Interpretacao Ambiental da Caldeira Velha, are two outdoor Thermal Spring Pools, Piscina de aguas termales, of 24°C to 39°C,
    surrounded by trees and lush vegetation part of an amazing subtropical forest and nature reserve. Within the forest, near the thermal pools, enjoy the Cascada de agua templada “orange” waterfall and pool. Caldeira Velha is on the EN5-2A road, 4 km north of Fogo Lake.
  4. The impressive Salto do Cabrito waterfall is 3 km north of Caldeira Velha on the same road.

The PRC 29 Trail, a beautiful easy/medium 9 km, 3 hours circular trail, leads from Salto do Cabrito to Caldeiras da Reberia Grande, a nice and small thermal spring with two outdoor pools and good facilities.
