The grandest and most popular of the Loire Valley palaces, 17 km East of Blois. The palace was commissioned in the 18th century by king François I to rival Paris’ Versailles Palace with its wonderful grandeur. The palace’s architecture is a wonder of symmetry with an impressive Renaissance facade and extravagantly decorated roof, framed with fairytale towers in an array of shapes and sizes. Admire the chateau’s famous double helix staircase sometimes attributed to Leonardo da Vinci and explore the glorious state apartments part of the palace’s 440 rooms. The state apartments are decorated with extravagant tapestries, enormous oil paintings, beautiful artworks, and 18th century furniture. Be sure to visit Louis XIV’s highly decorated bedchamber, the palace chapel, the coach room with its display of grand and rich coaches, and the 18th century kitchens. Stroll and admire the fabulous French formal gardens, in the palace’ stables enjoy a beautiful equestrian show, and rent bicycles, electric vehicles, or rowboats to explore the Chambord Park.
