• Calheta town and Beach

A relatively large fishing town close to the southwestern tip off the island, 34 km west of Funchal.
The Calheta Beach, centered in the town’s coastline, is a sheltered beach the only one in the island with golden sand brought artificially every year.
The beach which has good surfing conditions, has all the required beach facilities including a bar, restaurant and children’s playground on the beach promenade.
Also in town, Madeiras Modern Art Museum, MUDAS, with a viewing terraces offering magnificent landscapes, and a highly decorated 15th century church, Igreja Matriz Espirito Santo, with magnificent wood ceiling and blue and white tiles panells.
Six km west of Calheta, Paul do Mar, is a small fishing village with a small pebbled beach offering good surfing conditions.
Driving the ER211/105 scenic road 10 km north up to the mountains, you will arrive to Paul da Serra plateau, 1,500 meters high,
offering great landscapes of the surrounding mountain tips, deep valleys and waterfalls, Laurissilva forests, and beautiful Levadas and hiking trails such as the PR6/6.1 trail. On ER105 you will find on the Paul da Serra Plateau the starting point of two Levadas to the Risco waterfall and the Lagoa das 25 Fontes Waterfall, and many others.
