The main town in the central Loire Valley region between Tours and Orleans on the banks of the Loire River, 63 km southwest of Orleans, and 66 km northeast of Tours. The town flourished in the 16th century being the home of the Castle of Blois, the favorite residence place of the French Kings and Queens during the Renaissance. Blois is a perfect gateway to the Loire Valley major palaces and attractions.
When in town, stroll the impressive old town centered in Rue des Trois, around the Castle and Square of Blois, and in Place St-Louis around the cathedral. Near the castle visit the enjoyable House of Magic (Maison de la Magie) devoted to magic and optical illusions. Climb the Escalier Denis Papin stairway to admire the beautiful landscapes of the old town, the Loire River, and the 18th century Pont Jacques Gabriel Bridge which offers also great scenery.
Explore the Foundation du Doute, a museum dedicated to the radical Fluxus movement home to 300 artworks by 50 artists including Yoko Ono, Wolf Vostell and John Cage, and enjoy one of many daily markets operating in various sites in town. East of Blois visit two of the most important castles in the Loire Valley, Chateau de Chambord, the largest and most visited castle in the region, and Chateau de Cheverny, a more recent castle with the most beautiful interiors in the Loire Valley.
