Berchtesgaden is a small town usually a tourists’ base for visitors of the Konigssee Lake and the Berchtesgaden National Park, and the start (end) of the German Alpine Road.
The town is in the southeastern region of Germany, on the Austrian border, 141 km southeast of Munich and 25 km south of Salzburg, Austria, considered one of the most popular mountain resorts in the Bavarian Alps. Berchtesgaden combines the traditional Alpine town characteristics with a modern and vibrant tourist town, home to small shops, traditional inns, SPA’s, restaurants, and cafes. When in town visit the Konigssee Lake, hike and cycle the numerous beautiful trails within the Berchtesgaden National Park and enjoy the overwhelming scenery and the tranquility of the Alpine hills’ meadows.
Near town, visit the Nazi Eagle’s Nest, Obersalzberg, while absorbing its dark history, and enjoy the overwhelming landscapes. Ride a small train into the old Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, Salzbergwerk, and drive the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse (Road) within the tranquil meadows surrounded by the Alps peaks. Take the Jenner Mountain Cable car, Jennerbahn, up to the Jenner Mountain station, ride the Sommerrodelbahn Slide 600 meters downhill, and hike the beautiful and impressive Wimbachklamm Gorge.
South of Berchtesgaden you will find  Schönau am Königssee village, a small tourist center for the region visitors, located on the northern banks of Königssee Lake and surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps. In the village a large car park 10 minutes’ walk away from the lake shores and the nearby Jenner Mountain cable car. Spend at least 2 days in Berchtesgaden, all year round, visiting Konigssee Lake, the Berchtesgaden National Park, and the surrounding attractions.
