• Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

Built in the 1st century it’s one of the seven pilgrimage churches, and one of the four papal basilicas in Rome. The large marble columns of the basilica probably came from an ancient Roman building. In the church a golden coffered ceiling commissioned by Pope Alexander VI and was built with gold brought by Columbus from America. The patriarchal basilica contains the funerary monuments of Pope Clement IX, Paul V and Nicolas IV.
