Known for its 5th and 6th centuries BC impressive and fascinating Greek complex of temples, The Valley of Temples, the city is located near the southeastern Sicily coast, 126 km south of Palermo and 100 km west of Villa Romana.

The Valley of Temples is a 2 km long site, with two parking areas at both ends.
Walking from the eastern end you will admire various enormous and beautiful temples along the eastern ridge of the complex including;

  • The Temple of Juno, a large and highly preserved 5th century BC Doric temple at the top of the hill.
  • The Temple of Concord, the most preserved and impressive temple of all, 40 meters long and 20 meters wide, with a huge bronze statue of Icarus at the foot of the Temple.
  • The Temple of Hercules, a 6th century BC large temple in ruin near the Golden Gate (Porta Aurea).

Following these three magnificent temples, there are few more temples on the western stretch of the complex, in different stages of destruction.

  • The Temple of Olympian Zeus, across the Golden Gate, also called the Palace of the Gods. The 113 meters by 56 meters temple remained unfinished and was significantly damaged by the Carthaginians in the 5th century BC.
  • The Temple of Olympian Jupiter
  • The Temple of Castor and Pollux
  • The Temple of Vulcan
  • The Temple of Asclepius.

More in the complex, a 4th century BC walls that surrounded the complex, Villa Aurea, and the nearby Byzantine Necropolis, with the monumental tomb of Theron.
